Competition to photograph the best of Wales' 20th Century architecture

For much of the 20th century, a group of architects sought to define a new architecture for Wales. From grand civic buildings to radical new approaches to housing, these architects took inspiration from global design movements to define an architecture unique to Wales.

We are looking for images that capture something of the story of a particular 20th century building or structure in Wales. That story could be to do with its relationship to its users, its physical context, nature, or contemporary culture and politics. This competition is not about the technical prowess of the photographer, but about the ability to communicate an idea through a single frame.

If you’re not sure where to start, then here is an interactive map detailing some of these buildings. This isn’t a definitive list, and we encourage all entrants to do some research and find the hidden gems local to them. Please note that a number of these buildings may be located on private property, and it is the entrant’s responsibility to ensure that they have secured any necessary permissions to take and share their images.

Rules

1. The image must feature a building or structure built between 1900 and 1999 in Wales. Images can be captured on any device or camera and should be uploaded to your Instagram account tagging @DC.ffoto and using the hashtag #DCffoto. We will then repost entries to the @DC.ffoto Instagram account.

2. The image caption is to include the name of the building, its designers and the year in which it was built if known, as well as a single sentence, in Welsh or English, that states why you chose that particular composition to tell that building’s story.

3. We encourage colour, exposure and crop adjustments to the image if it helps to communicate the idea. Manipulation of the content of the photo is not allowed.

4. Entrants are welcome to contribute more than one image, to be submitted as separate posts.

5. If you do not have an Instagram account, then please email entries to designcircle.rsawsouth@gmail.com.

6. Images must have a resolution of at least 8 megapixels. Please retain an original unedited version of any image that you enter.
